Quayside Reviews

Booked Quayside as a short midweek break for 8 friends. Quayside was spacious, Comfortable and warm. The location is great for Sandsends limited facilities but a lovely beach walk or regular bus service to nearby Whitby. As previous reviews state the house could do with a little TLC but this is reflected in the price we payed and it was everything we needed. There appeared to be a new WiFi router which worked will throughout the building. We had a fantastic meal at the Hart inn opposite with great service. Would recommend a short stay here.
Warren
Fantastic location the bedding and towels were clean plenty of kitchen utensils to use One of the couches was in dire condition. Paintwork needs a fresh coat especially in the hallway and found large cobwebs behind doors which had not been cleaned for some time. It was a shame as the location was very good
This property is ideal in location. The view from the front bay window speaks for itself. The property is as described. Its not five star luxury but its homely and clean and a beach side property that comes well equipped. We stayed back in 2019 and again last week and I had lowered my expectations due to recent reviews but in all honestly it was perfect for what we wanted and we would stay again and again.
Richard
This was an autumn weekend break for four old school friends. The location was great, right in the middle of Sandsend do be aware thats apart from a couple of restaurants a pub and the odd bucket and spade shop there is nothing else here Not even a convenience store! That is also a positive contrast to Whitby, which is always rammed busy There is a great traditional pub just across the road. For everything else, Whitby is just up the road and a nice hour stroll along the beach. The cottage is large and spacious with comfortable living accommodation. The kitchen is getting a little bit tired, but having read some comments about a lack of TLC, we had lowered our expectations, and were happy upon arrival! If you need to work whilst staying, beware there is virtually zero mobile signal or data available and fibre Internet has not yet reached Sandsend. Also note there is one car parking space, I expect in summer finding additional parking in the village could be a problem.
Location was fantastic but exterior and interior needs some attention and TLC. Although there were all the items in the property that were required for the occupants, everything looked tired and a little neglected. If we visited the area again I would look for other properties than Quayside but due to the location would settle for the property if there was no other option and that may be the very reason why there has not been any investment into Quayside to upgrade the facilities
I have already made a complaint as the house had not been cleaned for our arrival, no beds made, last guests rubbish etc. The house itself is in a lovely location, is big, roomy & well equipped. It needs a bit of tlc though. There is paint peeling of walls in lounge and main bathroom. Door handle on downstairs loo needs attention, carpet on stairs need retacking in places. Some of the mattresses are a bit past there best. I had a single bed in the attic and put a few mattress toppers from other beds on it! The dark grey sofa in the lounge needs replacing.... springs gone. There is a cracked hand basin in the middle twin bedroom. We felt it also could do with a deep clean.... felt a bit grubby. Particularly the kitchen and utility bit. There was no guest book to write things down! TV instructions needed!
The front door was difficult to open so used back door. Stairs to top floor difficult for young children or people with mobility issues. beautifully decorated and presented house with everything we needed. Right on Sandsend beach. Nearby parking but this might be more challenging in high season
Lovely stay, everything we required , the slight problem we had with the heating was sorted within 20 mins of my phone call so brilliant service, thank you.
Quayside is a great house for a seaside holiday with a view of the beach from the lounge and front bedroom. We had a cosy stay over Christmas, the house was warm on arrival and the heating worked well. Towels and linen were great. Sofas are a bit tired. Nice welcome bag of goodies with tea, coffee, biscuits and cake. The kitchen is well stocked with crockery, mugs and glasses but a pair of oven gloves would be useful. Also only one bin liner for a week is not adequate. I don't want to have to go out to buy bin liners and dishwasher tablets when I've paid 2k to rent a house for a week. Parking is limited to one car but that is clearly stated in the listing. Not a problem in the winter when the car park is free but would be expensive in the summer.

Another comfortable stay at Quayside. We have been coming for 5 years. A few improvements since our stay last year, new carpet in the hallway. A couple of the bedrooms had new taps and also bedside rugs and throws. The only downside was we only had 2 hand towels between 5 of us. Otherwise a lovely time was had.
This property was in need of a deep clean. There was dust on many frames, balls of hair under beds, mould in both bathrooms on walls, corners of showerbath areas. No oven gloves. Mould on the lampshade, wall and pillow cases in the ensuite bedroom at rear of property which was cold even with the heating on. The front bay window could not be locked so a security issue. No dustpan and brush. Some of the pillows did not have protective covers. The bottom drawertray in the fridge was stuck with ice to the fridge itself which I had to sort out before we could use it. The fridge in my opinion is far too small for a group of 10 people. The front door was obstructed by rolls of carpet, and a vacuum which was a fire risk I moved them in order that if there was a fire we could exit the property by either door. The external bin was almost full and clearly hadnt been emptied for weeks. We ended up leaving a day early as couldnt face another night in a cold and insecure house. You could actually hear peoples conversations who were on the bridge from both the lounge and front double bedroom unless drowned out by the intense volume of traffic or the music from the neighbouring fish and chip shop.We will not be returning which is a shame as the cottage itself is in a great location for a summer beach holiday.
Chelsey
Ideal spot and a great size house for our family but very unclean. Downstairs toilet is just floorboard and smells very strongly of urine that has obviously seeped into the floor. No carpeted bedrooms, sofas and other furnishings are unclean, would be a beautiful view if you could see through the windows. We were warm and comfortable in the evening, handy to have washer and dryer ! Cupboards are very full of mismatched tableware so could do with a declutter, highchair was filthy so luckily we bought our own with us. Its such a shame that the overall cleanliness and care of the house let it down because it has so much potential to be a beautiful place to stay. Our children were on summer holiday a week past Yorkshire so we didnt pay the usual summer holiday prices, Id say what we paid was roughly around what youd expect to pay for the property but 100 not worth the price it was for the week before. Welcome package was a thoughtful extra but perhaps would have been better off spending the money on a longer clean
Melissa
The property is a lot more dated than the pictures on the website show. Unfortunately, we didnt find the cleanliness of the property to our standard. We werent expecting a show home but rubbish under the couches, in between couch cushions and dirty socks down the back of radiators isnt a great welcome. The light fittings were covered in cobwebs and some of the walls especially the bathrooms did have mould. Saving grace was that the beds were clean and comfortable. The location of the property was great as the kids could enjoy the beach all day and only have a very short walk back for a shower. The rooms are spacious and there are plenty of bathrooms. One lunch time we discovered that there wasnt any hot water so we called Sykes and the person we spoke to was so helpful, excellent customer service. We only waited around 45 minutes for someone to arrive and once I greeted him his response was Im not promising I can fix it. A little abrupt but the problem was then resolved within 10 minutes. The appliances are all in working order but well used. There were bags on each bed which we assumed were to strip the beds before we left, but there was no instruction of this in the guestbook. We did it anyway but maybe this could be included for future guests. If youre looking for somewhere to rest your head after a busy day then this is for you.
We had a wonderful holiday together the location is perfect with the beach literally just across the road and lots of walks and sites of interest nearby. The house was warm and there were plenty of bathrooms and bedroom sinks. The bedrooms, lounge and dining room were all comfortable and roomy. The kitchen had plenty of crockery, cutlery and saucepans. The oven was large but a second shelf would have been helpful. There were cooking knives but they needed to be sharpened. Food storage in the kitchen, pantry and fridge was quite cramped and the two white shelves in the kitchen, that I think were intended for ornaments, were quite dirty when we arrived. Before we arrived we asked if oven gloves would be provided which, we were assured, would be but they weren't. This, however, was a small inconvenience.

We have had a lovely weekend, the location of the property is fantastic. As much as it was explained that there was only the one parking space, it does seem a shame no packing permit was available, as it cost a small fortune to pay for the car parking for the weekend. The little welcome pack was very great fully received . However the cleanliness of the property was something a little less pleasant. The area at the side door hadnt been swept, it was covered in sand. Thick layers of dust under the sofas and the beds, the skirtings were filthy and one guest even felt the need to bleach the shower before any of us used it. The property is just looking abit tired. Now this didnt take anything away from our weekend because we were all just happy to be away, but other guests might be abit more picky!! All in all a good weekend
Anne-marie
There were areas of improvement with cleaning, not hoovered under sofas, cobwebs and some baking trays dirty. Not enough cleaning product around and the pantry needs cleaning out of all junk in there. For 10 people the fridge freezer wS quite small, particularly the fridge. Not having an outdoor space was a downfall as we had a couple of decent days where it would have been lovely to sit outside with a drink. Despite all this the house is lovely and comfy and an absolutely beautiful location. The beds were a bit soft and the pillows were too soft aswell, so some upgrades would improve the overall experience, perhaps a nest of tables to put drinks on in the lounge aswell. For the location and standard of accommodation the price was very reasonable for the time of year. If I had to pay more I'd be disappointed due to the things mentioned. I woukd stay in this house again at similar price without hesitation.
Hi, really enjoyed our stay at the cottage for a family get together. Warm, clean & comfortable. The grandchildren loved playing by & in the river built stone towers, made rafts & generally had fun, even in Feb! Great area to find fossils. A couple of minor points not to be negative but advice for future guests we had 3 cars between us so parking near the property wasnt that easy.. luckily one of the main car parks was free until the end of March so we used that. Might be more of a problem in peak periods. Property was on a main costal road from Whitby to Saltburn so had to be extra careful with the children & dogs, especially with no garden but we were aware of that beforehand But had a brilliant time !! Additional Note to ownersmanagement fridge & general food storage space was limited especially for 8 guests. cookeroven probably needs updated & more energy efficient. have you looked into acquiring the spare land behind the gift shop to turn into a small courtyard for guests to use?
Dianne
Lovely house and soooo close to the beach. Yorkshire Cottages were amazing so helpful when I needed to phone to ask where the high chair was in the porch!! Would definitely return to the house and use Yorkshire Cottages again. Thank you
Nice property brilliant location, everything is there for a great vacation. We did have an issue with the heating which was sorted within a couple of hours. There are parts of the interior that would benefit from redecoration, overall we had an excellent break and would be happy to return
Angela
Lovely property for family holiday with children Stairs to top floor rather dangerous and there were a lot of flies up there when we first got there. We loved the position of house, beach on doorstep, ducks to feed and watersea so close. Heating went off but plumber was there within the hour to fix it. Lovely bedding, well equipped and very comfortable. Everyone loved it and wants to come again.
Lillian
Good property for a family holiday. Warm, comfortable and well equipped. Location is superb. The only downside is that there are a few maintenance issues that need attention and have been mentioned in previous reviews. These will probably be sorted in the quieter season though. We would come back if looking to visit Sandsend again.
Visited in October. The property is spacious with good facilities and has fantastic views out over the bay, however, these were somewhat spoiled by the double glazed units in the lounge being 'blown'. Condensation was also a problem in the front bedroom. Overall we were satisfied with the experience.
Richard
Had to clear and wash out drier filter and condenser was cracked and leaked. Facilities and location otherwise are ideal for a family stay.
Brilliant location so loved being able to get straight to the beach which is fantastic The kitchen is great and really well provided in terms of pans and equipment and the living room and bedrooms are all lovely. The dining room is gloomy with very heavy furniture so we ate in the kitchen, which was fine.
Victoria
House was perfect for what we needed and location to the beach perfect with young children. The kitchen did the job, the lounge fit us all comfortably and there were more toilets than we were expecting so no fighting! We had a temporary shower curtain in one bathroom but it did the job and they made a point of phoning ahead to let us know. Bedding lovely but inconsistent quality on doubles compared with twins, guess singles machine washable if any accidents? The only downside is the wear and tear and cleanliness of windows. The downstairs toilet needs a complete redo, paint work internally needs stripping back and starting again. The windows are filthy, I raised this on the check in call but was advised theyre not allowed access to clean them. Its not good enough, they need regularly cleaning and if not from outside then inside. Would come back but planned maintenance and TLC essential.
Jennie
No rear garden as advertised. Needed to let the dog out to go the toilet. No oven gloves, even though requested No hair dryer in main bedroom Cobwebs in windows Hairs and dirt from previous guests No bin liners No bed linen bags Mouldy walls and bathroom tiles Skirting boards very dirty Marks and dirt on walls that haven't been wiped Shower door dangerous, coming off the rails One of lamps in main double not working Door knob coming off to one of the double room No salt Cleaners were suppose to come on Sat after curiosity call. No one came or if they did we couldn't tell Had to wash pots before using as they were dirty
Claire
Really good location with great views! Also the house itself was extremely comfortable and everything we could need was available. We'll visit again!
Quayside is a great cottage in a wonderful position and is perfect for our family. The problem we have is with the double beds not really being big enough and suitable for tall adults, most of our adults are over 6ft and one is 67! The property needs some TLC but being so close to the sea it is always going to be an ongoing issue and something we accept. We love the space and the facilities are good with a very efficient heating system. Getting enough hot water to fill the bath is a bit of a problem but it is only used for the children so a kettle full of boiling water is usually enough to get a temperature suitable for them. We love staying at Quayside and creating wonderful memories for the children, just as their fathers have when they stayed at Sandsend as children. The comments I have made are not for criticism but just feedback that might be of use. We stayed last year and have booked again for next year and everyone cant wait to come back.
This property is fantastic for families with children looking to be close to the beach. The house has pretty much everything that you need. It is near lots of cafes, restaurants and a pub which is ideal for a self catering holiday let. We travelled with a young baby and had a lovely time whilst we was away. The house does have some small things that could do with updating. The general cleanliness was ok but I think the property could do with a real deep clean hallway carpet, bathrooms, curtains. I think that this may be because the house gets so much use being booked out all year. Other than that we loved the house. Also there was no coffee left which you normally get at a holiday let, so take some if you stay here. We would book this property again with the children and would recommend to our friends.
The house is lovely and the location is perfect. We had a fab stay and the bedrooms and living room were great for our needs. There were a few niggly issues that did impact on our stay and that we would like to draw your attention to so that they can hopefully be sorted out for future guests The toilet in the main house bathroom on the first floor was unusable as when it was flushed, the pan filled up and took a very long time to drain The shower tray in the main house bathroom on the first floor filled up so quickly and drained very slowly, meaning only very short showers could be had otherwise it would have overflowed so short that the water didn't get chance to properly heat up There was broken glass and a cracked cup in one of the kitchen cupboards Some plates had been put back in the cupboard which weren't properly clean The cooker really needs updating. The house is really lovely and we did have a good weekend but we chose the property specifically because we wanted more than one bathroom and we were effectively reduced to one shower between nine of us.
Catherine
My friends and I have been coming to stay here for 4 years now. When we arrived on this visit, the house was freezing as the heating was switched off! It took a day to heat up. Apart from that it was clean and tidy and finally someone has swept up outside. Much better than last time.
Jackie
Lovely house, well equipped, amazing location. We were worried after previous reviews about cleanliness but the house was spotless. There were a few minor maintenance issues, not unusual for a house this old, but nothing that detracted from our stay. We were 2 families and there was plenty of space for everyone to enjoy. Everyones favourite place was sitting in the window seat, watching the waves and also the world going by. Pub opposite, fish restaurant almost next door, 2 cafes, local store. Reliable local bus service to Whitby if you dont want to walk along the beach every time. A very relaxing stay.
Catherine
We love staying at Quayside, this was our fifth visit. The house suits our needs as a group of friends and the location can't be beaten! However, on this visit we found the house wasn't as clean. The seat cushions on the sofas hadn't been hoovered under for a while and there were empty cans under them! Up in the attic bedrooms was noisy, there was a bangingflapping noise coming from the sides of the rear dormer when it was windy. The hot tap in the furthest attic bedroom doesn't work. The outside, around the porch door still could do with a sweep and a lick of paint. We mentioned this last time!
Quayside cottage is delightful, we stayed for my 60th birthday at the beginning of November with family , dogs and babies . The size and location of the house were perfect and as we did have sandy dogs and babies I felt I was able to relax without having to continually clean up although I still did ! During the week the heating and hot water stopped working however the agents rectified this within a few hours . Before our visit I had read some bad reviews and was very concerned however the house is warm , comfortable, in a superb location next to the beach and great pub ! It isnt 5 star as needs a lot of maintenance but is a comfy , beachside home and we had a very happy week
I was concerned after reading several reviews about the cleanliness of the house particularly but I didnt need to be. The house was clean and we had a lovely stay. The location is perfect for the beach and is very well equipped on the whole. The fish and chip shop along the road is lovely and the pub food across the road is delicious with huge portions. We took the bus to Whitby and Runswick Bay. The only improvements I would say is that some of the mattresses could do to be replaced and some more glasses for the kitchen which would make the stay perfect. We are hoping to return next year.
