Hazeldene Reviews

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hazeldene. Ideally located we had days out at Goathland, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. The cottage was lovely, spacious and wellequipped which meant that on the colder days it was a perfect base for a cosy day in painting and playing games. The hosts left a lovely welcome package from Bothams bakery which was gorgeous and very well received. The village of Sleights is small, but has everything you need bakery, spa, butchers, pub, fish shop etc. Make sure you take good walking shoes if you intend to tackle the walk uphill from the cottage though. Thank you, we really enjoyed our new year break away at Hazeldene.
Carolyn
The property was well equipped, clean and comfortable and we really appreciated the welcome basket of delicious things.
An extremely well presented period property. Well appointed kitchen and facilities. Very comfortable beds. Well situated for local train and bus services.

Spacious and airy even given the very warm weather A couple of fans might prove useful we took our own for the dog A delightful house for a family get together and suitable for children and adults given the proximity of Scarborough Flamingo land etc A lovely place to stay
Excellent property, well equipped with quality goods. Ideal location. Only down side we could have done with some fans as bedrooms very hot in the glorious weather we had
Hazeldene DIRTY UNKEMPT LACKING FACILITIES PROPERTY We have now finished holidaying in the property it was the dirtiest property we have ever stayed in! It needs a deep clean to get it up to standard and to get the shabbiest garden under control! not only for aesthetic reasons but also getting to that barbecue around the back which is horrible and squeezed in by a fence and wall and overgrown foliage in a 4ft wide space is an absolute health and safety hazard, no one could possibly barbecue round there! The garden is wild and has huge thorny runners and no plants anymore showing amongst the grasses. We took detailed pictures of the whole house and garden so the reality shows what hazeldene was really like in comparison to photos on the holiday cottages site used to sell the property as a holiday let NO COMPARISON! Three times a year we hire property for breaks and we have never had to clean like we did here. We cleaned before we left so the property is ready for the cleaners to do a better job hopefully for the next people DISGUSTING that we had to purchase cleaning products and clean the house Its noticeable that very few people have left comments in the visitors book over a four year period obviously preferring to say nothing. The only positive comments were from over 2 years ago. Such a beautiful house potentially with such possibilities absolutely let down by maintenance and cleaning and upkeep and a lack of decent equipment and furnishings. As stated I have photographed everything so can back up our complaints should anyone want to see them. 1. Freezer and fridge was filthy absolutely filthy we have photos 2. Crumbs, debris etc in kitchen around all areas of floor and the 2 bin lids were vile we had to scrub them clean. The outside bin for the house rubbish had maggots in bottom! 3. heavy dust and dog hairs everywhere including on hearth where someone had brushed their dog hair put it there and it was left by cleaners. Dusty obvious Webs in lounge and dining room and slug trail in kitchen. 4. Kick board by dishwasher and cupboards keeps coming off as its not fixed on so its just concrete you see around that wall and dishwasher door is jamming badly because of it. 5. needs some kitchen basics provided oven gloves and dishwasher safe pans the ones according to the blue folder provided with all dos and dont in property are not and the frying pans we wouldnt use as they are no longer non stick and are ready to bin so way past their best. Who wants to wash pans on holiday every time they cook! 6. Oven is disgusting and needs a professional clean its way beyond a wipe! 7. Lounge rug is disgusting and absolutely stinks from the multitude of dogs who have been on it underneath is filthy as hasnt been moved, we moved it only to put coffees on and then saw what was underneath! just clean it! 8. Hall rug covered in white dog hair and dirty we tried vacuuming but it doesnt pick up as the vacuum has no filter and is so old. 9. chairs in lounge covered in white hairs around all sides of various dogs 10. Cooker used once by us and we didnt use again as its just sticky and nasty 11. bedroom bin which wasnt our rubbish on arrival was FULL of someone elses rubbish 12. Why are fire hydrants in bathrooms and nowhere else in house? 13. Outside table is in a bad state and the grass is just weeds and bare patches from the dogs 14. Couldnt use vacuum its hopeless and half a broken sweeping brush is useless and so swept as best we could also mop is useless and no longer works as a mop its non absorbent so spreads water not mopping it. 15. Washing line snapped with washing on line as its gone brittle 16. Gutters are blocked at back. According to independent reviews comments have been made concerning cleanliness by others and we are probably not going to be the last. Love sleights, love the area in general and it is so central for walkers, train buffs and coastal tourism so thats a good thing, one of the locals told us the pub in the village isnt used by the locals and we went one day and saw why, bare cold no character and shabby beyond words. We contacted the owners and the holiday letting agency while we were there and got an apology from owners but nothing more, what would have been appreciated would have been cleaners coming back and doing a decent job! We got no response from the company and were totally ignored. Sent an email and left voice message but nothing response. Theres only one tv in whole house, the WiFi speed is 8.. we tested regularly as my husband had some work to do and that was the highest we got, no good for 8 people if they had kids and tablets etc to use altogether the usual lowest you can expect is a speed around 30 again I screenshotted the daily speed test so can back this up. The house is lacking in so much including things like lamps in the big rooms as theres only one and occasional tables in the big lounge 8 people this house can take and 1 coffee table in a huge room! and maybe some fans for bedrooms maybe a DVD player all things most holiday lets already have and better garden and property maintenance. we feel badly let down by the Sykes listing and very outdated pictures from 2021 and the fact that we had to buy decent cleaning products and clean on our holiday very disappointing and adapt to some unexpected unfair situations, NOONE wants to take on heavy cleaning in someone elses property and pay to stay in it! I have taken photos and videos of how we left the property in case the cleaning agency is in any doubt that we left it a whole lot better than we found it. I will be reviewing with Sykes etc. but once I put it on they will remove it as it doesnt fit their marketing! I will however be leaving this also on trip advisor with photographs, this has been a very disappointing property with fake advertising photography and the elderly couple we took for a restful holiday did not benefit from a week in this house. Pretty disgusted really. No response was received so theres not much more to say really other than THIS PROPERTY IS FILTHY!

This is an excellent house for a family getaway we particularly valued having a bathroom on both 1st and 2nd floor and toilet on ground floor, as well as ensuite to one bedroom. If the 2nd floor bathroom could have a shower fitted over the bath, it would be the icing on the cake but honestly it was fine as it is, and so much better than other holiday houses of its size. The welcome hamper was much appreciated, as was the presence of a proper sized cafetiere for the coffee. If possible, it would be great to have some staples too, such as sugar, salt and pepper, cooking oil it all helps. It would also be really handy to have a couple of sets of keys, as we were three sets of people who potentially might like to come and go independently. Plenty of seating in living room, and also round dining table though we didn't actually eat in, and TV was straightforward to use. In some holiday houses the TV instructions are so complicated you get multiple proggers and have to use them in a certain order but no such issues here! Extra fridge is a good idea. We did use the washing machine but couldn't find any pegs to hang washing out. The stairgates were very useful, and a good idea to have them on each level. Onstreet parking was fine for our three cars, and the house is handy for the station, though the train service is very limited. Salmon's Leap Hotel across from the house is usually open in the evenings and has a beer garden we never made it up the hill to the other pub in the village. Just a bit too far! Botham's Bakery very welcome, great butcherdeli too, and Spar, all up the hill, with a simply gorgeous garden centre across the railway and down the road to the right. I never thought I would eulogise about a garden centre but there you go! Our favourite place in the area Saltburn. More laidback and relaxed than Whitby, easy parking, funicular down to beach, meal on the terrace of the Seaview Restaurant. Fantastic.
The few minor problems that there were no fault of the property or owners, were dealt with quickly, courteously and brilliantly. Lovely stay, lovely property, great owners. We will recommend and we will be back.
Melanie
Great place to stay for New year with all the family. The owner was very helpful before check in and appreciated the personal touches left including the welcome basket. Good location and plenty of parking and easy access to Whitby by train which was literally across the road. Would definitely return for another visit thank you.
Alison
Lovely property in a good location for visiting Whitby and nearby coastal destinations.
A traditional house in a good location for exploring the area. It is well equipped, and thank you for the generous welcome pack. There were a few cleanliness issues though. The sink was badly tea stained and there were a couple of half eaten ice lollies in the freezer. We found a banana skin under the sofa in the lounge, and an empty soft drinks bottle under one of the beds. However, we did enjoy our stay in this lovely property.
Lindsey
The house looks lovely and could potentially be amazing, however we encountered some issues dishwasher did not clean properly. Plates in the cupboard had food on them and ee soon realised why. We ended up hand washing everything. Maybe adding rinse aid and salt between stays would help, but it really was poor. oven took twice as long as it should to cook anything. wifi was extremely slow and didn't work at times. Some signal boosters might help with the property having such thick walls. cleanliness could be improved. Massive cobwebs in several areas. Sat on the sofa and noticed in the crack between cushions was absolutely vile. slugs in the house. I put my slipper on in the last evening to find a slimy slug in there. There was also a slug trail in the kitchen hear the smallest window. duvet on bed in ensuite bedroom not big enough. Once 2 people were in the bed the duvet barely fitted. Ended up swapping it with the room next door. hamper on arrival was a lovely touch, and most of the decor was lovely paint in bedroom and ensuite was a bit grubby. Great location. If the above was resolved the property could easily be 5 star.
The cottage is extremely well appointed and is conveniently located in an attractive street in the village. The rail station is 50m and some great journeys into Whitby and the Villages on the Moors. The rooms are good sizes and its well thought through in terms of the provision of equipment. The house is very nice and overall very satisfied. The foul drain in the front garden is broken and therefore pushing waste onto the lawn making it inaccessible. Also the foul drain at the rear in the yard cannot deal with simple tasks such as the sink being emptied. Both need fixing as they pose a health risk.
Glynis
Fantastic house with everything you could need for a great holiday . It was in a great position near the railway line which took you into Whitby. The only draw back was the outdoor space as there were 3 children staying in the house and a larger garden would have been nice. The week we stayed in Sleights was very wet so if there had been a larger garden it probably wouldn't have been used anyway. . Very high standard and I would recommend a stay in this property.
We had a fabulous stay at Hazeldene which was spotless Would love to come again with the family . Well placed for Whitby and the beaches
Not sure if there was supposed to be one but there was no cheese grater or fish slice provided in the kitchen. Everything else was spot on
Maggie
Lovely spacious and well maintained house. We had everything we needed and the owner kindly posted a small item we had left behind.
What a lovely property to stay in over Christmas with our children and grandchildren. We were contacted the day before our arrival saying the house would be ready a couple of hours early and we really appreciated the tasty welcome pack. There was plenty of room for everyone and the kitchen was great for cooking our Christmas dinner. Sleights is a lovely little village and Whitby is always a great place to visit. We enjoyed walking from the house and another time will take the train into Whitby.
Lovely well kept, comfortable property, good location for our needs. Excellent welcome pack. Would definitely come back and recommend to others.
What a beautiful house. Had everything we needed. Lots of space for everyone and 2 dogs. Furnishings and decor beautiful. Beds really comfy. Perfectly placed we could leave the car, train just across the road and bus just up the road. Was lovely watching the steam train go by. The best welcome pack ever Will certainly be back xx
Our third holiday at Hazeldene which probably says it all! Good location, comfortable accommodation and everything you need for a good holiday.
We had a lovely stay at Hazeldene. The property was spacious, more than enough for 5 adults, a 2.5 year old, a baby and a chocolate Labrador. The property was we equipped overall, including an excellent set of sharp knives which my husband usually gripes about the lack of in many properties. The beds were lovely and comfortable. However we were a little taken aback by one tea towel and no oven gloves. This seemed totally out of character with everything else to do with the house. Maybe an oversight during the cleaning and preparation. My husband also likes to read and found the lighting a little dim for his liking maybe a reading lamp would be a welcome addition. Minor issues overall that didnt detract from our stay. The location was good for both the coast and North York Moors. We would have no hesitation in staying in the property again or recommending it to anyone. Many thanks to Sharon and Aladstair for allowing us to stay in their lovely home.
We initially had a problem with the heating but the owner came out immediately and sorted it. Great house for 4 couples. Fantastic kitchen although a pair of oven gloves would be useful ! Great situation for visiting Whitby and costal walks ! Our second time visiting this house.
Lovely property. made our family christmas perfect. bedrooms all beautifully decorated. lots of space for everyone. enormous kitchen with every facility. very good location close to the coast. Sleights is a lovely village. absolutely recommend this lovely house for a perfect get together for large groups or families
We had a lovely short break at Hazeldene! We were an extended family of 2 older teens, parents and grandparents and the house suited all out needs! There was plenty of space for us all and it was a very convenient base for everything we wanted to do!
We enjoyed our first visit to this lovely house in May so much that we booked a second visit. Just as good second time around!
A coffee machine would be good as well as generally better lighting
A lovely property in an excellent area. Nice walks from the front door, excellent butcher and bakers in the village as well as a Spar supermarket. Well located for day trips to the moors, various beaches, Whitby Abbey and nice walks or cycle rides, including coastal path walks and Cinder track cycling Whitby to Scarborough.
Superb house finished to a very high standard. Facilities excellent with plenty of space for our group of six. The proximity to the railway did not cause any issues as the trains are not very frequent. Ideal position for our week away.
We were a group of 4 couples and this cottage was ideal with four large double bedrooms. Spacious lounge superb well equipped kitchen. Quite location ideally situated for Whitby , etc. very welcoming with underfloor heating which made it so cosy. Highly recommend this cottage !
Angela
We had an enjoyable few days. The house is delightfully set near to the station with steam trains passing regularly. Nice river walks, near the garden centre and playpark. There is a good selection of nearby shops, but they are at the top of a fairly steep hill. The accommodation was good the addition of a second shower unit would be welcome.
Hazeldene is a really beautiful property, the pictures probably don't do it justice to be honest! The kitchen is fabulously spacious for 8 people, I would suggest another or a much larger fridge though we were a party of 6 and struggled to get all our food and drink into it. The decor is tasteful throughout, maybe a couple of occasional tables in the lounge with some lamps to give a slightly cosier atmosphere, and definitely a lamp in the dining room, it could be a little gloomy in that room. The beds and bed linen an extremely high standard, however if I were the owners I'd consider changing the double bed to a king or even super king size one. I would suggest the cleaners do some deep cleaning in the shower room ... the hand basin seemed to be blocked to be honest, and the shower drained very slowly, but these are all very tiny observations that didn't spoil our week's holiday in the slightest and I hope will be taken positively by the owner and not seen as complaints .... it was our first visit to North Yorkshire, an absolutely beautiful county, lovely people and Hazeldene is a very lovely property that I'd be more than happy to rebook.
Easy to find, everything we could of wanted was catered for, the house was ... Easy to find, everything we could of wanted was catered for, the house was really clean, plus it looked liked the pictures, lovely walks around, would definitely return , and recommend
Elizabeth
Hazeldene was perfect for our overdue family get together and had plenty of room for us all. The house is in a great location and had everything we needed and more. Each room is spacious and clean, the garden is a good sun trap and parking was always available on the roadside. The passing steam trains at the end of the road were an added bonus too. The location is ideal, with easy access to surrounding areas. The local pub is lovely too and walkable if you don't mind hills!
Great walks for dogs and kids from the front door. The front garden is a sun trap and great for sitting at the picnic table with evening drinks! A lovely and well equipped house. Parking outside no problem.
My wife and I happened upon Hazeldene when, without much notice, we had to find accommodation for a few weeks when our house purchase was delayed. We felt very lucky to have found Hazeldene as, very quickly, we felt very much at home there. Hazeldene was wonderfully comfortable, well appointed and made an unexpectedly difficult situation a lot less stressful for us.
